I think animals should have rights to some extent. Saying that because they cannot communicate, they should not have any type of protection is just stupid. As long as a being can feel pain, he should be able to have rights. Of course this does not mean that we should stop eating them. Eating their meats, is also a human right. We are at the top of the food chain and for that reason we should be able to eat them, as they also eat other animals themselves. Other than killing them for necessary purposes, such as providing food for fellow human beings or to test them for medical purposes, should be prohibited.

This issue is a complex one. While I would be livid if anyone tried to harm one of my dogs, I don't necessarily have a problem with fishing, which is no doubt, uncomfortable for the fish at the very least. However, the argument that justifies the meaningless torture of animals because they are "lesser beings," is one that has been used to reason the cause for genocide in the past. The animals with a higher consciousness and intelligence, I believe, must be protected. In addition, there are ways of killing animals for food in which the animal does not feel pain and these should be more widely utilized.

Animals do feel and should have rights, the fact that they do not have a language does not mean that they can't express pain, they do through loud noises and body language which is very similar to a human being's. Now, the fact that there are nutrients that are essential (need to be consumed through food not supplements) makes it a very hard subject to discuss. Vitamin B12 is one of the many that are needed in the human body according to nutritionists. Vegans very often lack these vitamins and have harmful health effects due to it. We might be being lied to but as far as the general public knows, we need those vitamins. Yes, we should be more aware of what we eat and control it a lot more since in America the biggest nutritional problem is obesity which is the opposite from the rest of the world. If we find a way to substitute the way we consume these essential vitamins we cannot stop consuming animals but we have to be more aware of the treatment of animals. We are being consumed by our own greed, we are consuming animals not for survival but for pleasure, a Hamburger is not necessary for survival.

According to Allan D. Cooper in his book The Geography of Genocide practices of genocide, including FGC which constitutes as genocide according to the UN, comes down to emasculation. We all respond to leadership, and when a leader goes through an emasculating moment he or even she is capable of many things. This practice is obviously a product of emasculation. The need of a man to feel powerful over the most valuable possession, his woman, can lead to this kind of practices. And then if this man is a powerful leader, many will follow. This practice is ancient, and will be extremely hard to rid this off this world. Nazi Germany didn’t just come up with the idea that Jews were at fault of their economic condition, it was an idea spread from 1933-1941 with propaganda of all kinds, including billboards. Most of Germany followed the leader, Adolph Hitler, whose emasculating moment was the same as all of Germany, the signing of the Treaty of Versailles. I believe the whole country just couldn’t understand how they got from an empire to a country buried in a depression after World War I. They had to have a savior, in this case Hitler. Until we change the way society is formed around the idea that males are the dominating genre, we will not get rid of these practices. And yes, we do see this in the U.S. as well. In the traditional house hold the men do the repairs, the women do the cleaning. Boys play sports, girls are cheerleaders. These are ideas that, like where FGC is practiced, have been given for thousands of years. Until we don’t change our way of thinking we won’t get rid of practices like this one.

Let me start off first by saying I am not a hypocrite.

Do I enjoy no, RELISH eating meat? Yes indeed.

Do I have any justification for my carnivorous diet?
No, not at all.

However, do I believe animals deserve better treatment if not rights?
- YES!

I can not honestly eat an animal that had rights because then I am eating a person. For i believe only a person has rights. If I eat a person than I myself as person am implying a sense of moral cannibalism.

Animal that is not a person does not have rights.
So I may be a callous but moral agent if I were Factory Farmer in charge of raising, breeding and slaughtering livestock.

Now if an Animal were person then it would have rights.

how can I own, let alone eat a person and still say to myself that I am a good moral agent?

Now that I've established why I can eat meat and feel no qualm about it. I may say that although I don't mind eating dead enslaved animals, I do NOT approve of factory farming methods on animals (not even produce to be sincere).

I advocate for "wholesome?" if at least not industrially cruel treatment of animals raised for the sole purpose of commercial consumption.

If anyone garners an animal rights then how would you justify owning a pet, caging a pet, selectively breeding a pet, or naming a pet?

(Change pet for slave and see how you feel)

My youngest brother was hanicapp and he was eventally diagnoss with mental retardation. He couldn't talk or walk, he would moan and groan or scream if he wanted something or if something bothered him. It was sad to see him that way, especially when he became older and harder to control. My mom lost custody of him because him became a danger to himself and others. This drove my mom to a nervous break down. She never really talked after that even up to her untimely death three years ago. In between the taken of my youngest brother and the death of my mom, I watched both of my two other brothers die of Aids, one year apart. Each of the incidents left each person unable to speak or communicate with me, even when they were in severe pain. The hardest thing to experence is not knowing how to help someone that can't tell you how to help them, what is bothering them or if they are hungry, tired or happy or sad. iching or aching and where the discomfort is. I know the same thing happens to animals, although they can't speak or show reason or show emotion, doesn't mean they feel less pain than we do. They scream like we do , they moan like we do, they reget beatings like we do, they run and try to hide from their abuser like we do. In fact they respaond In many of they ways we do to pain and abuse like we do, they JUST CAN'T SPEAK! I didn't have to her my brothers say they hurt, I knew; or my mom, I knew. Just like we know that animals feel pain. The inhumane acts of the abuse given by many toward animals should be punishable by law to the fullest degree of law. How we use animals for food, clothing, experiments, and entertainment would be more exceptable if laws were in place for the abuse on the companies that violate the laws given animals right aginst abuse. That would be a great start if the government spoke up for the animals because, THEY CAN'T SPEAK!

I believe animals should have certain rights, but definitely not to the extent of human rights. I believe that we should not torture animals because they do indeed feel pain and because factory farms are not unusual here in the states, but I believe we should try and figure out a better way to feed our people without the use of torturing animals. I never usually think about these types of things when I am eating meat so I am probably not a huge activists in this subject but I do believe we can do better.

just because an animal cannot speak doesn't mean that they don't have the same rights are humans do. Kant also stated at one point that we should treat all of ourselves not as ends to a point for we are ends in the kingdom of ends. We exist along side animals symbiotically using them for field work, comfort, and support without thinking about how hard life would be without them. Many cures that have leads to great diseases being wiped from the face of the planet came from animal testing. The cure for diseases like heart worms were first discovered with animals long before humans. People find these treatments inhumane which I agree with yes but only because a monkey doesn't agree to e tested on, it has no free will being unable to communicate or escape when faced against multiple people at once. Returning back to the subject, animals should have rights but only if we are ready to soak the consequences of this action. After all if we remove animals from the scientific method then both animals and humans would see a sharp decline in research speed due to a large drop in testing subjects. In order to make an omelet you have to break some eggs after all.

As a vegetarian I do not like hearing about animal testing or any sort of violent act towards animals. I think the farms that proses meat need to understand that it's their responsibility to take care of the animal before they kill it. Not just trow it in a cage that is not suitable for a standard of living. Just like we as humans take care of a new born, they should show the same care and responsibility for any animal in a farm. Not that a animal has the same standard as a human, they just should be treated like they have a live to live for.

I think that by killing an animal and ending it's life for it to become a burger is not sufficient as if it was kept alive. More good will come from the animal been alive than it would for it been a meal.

Since the discussion whether people are animals or not came up in class, let me just add this: I’ve met some idiots throughout my life that would get offended if told that humans were very much primates. Even when they read it from an actual scientific article, they would just choose not to believe it. What makes us so superior? What makes them think that just because they have their mediocre vocabulary they are better than a creature that does not? Like Triff said Superiority does not equal more evolved. And sadly this is the way we treat our fellow humans from the rest of the world. This is not limited to animals. This happens everywhere. White or Black, American or English, male or female, younger or older, your religion or my religion, it is just lame. And this are the basis of wars, genocides and every atrocity that we have seen throughout history.

I think all living thinks should have rights. At least the right to be free from Human manipulation. The Articles mentions that they should not have right because they don't have interest, but all living being share the interest of being alive and we are violating that principle. Using animals for medical research is somewhat necessary but up to a certain extend. Cosmetics and entertainment is pure animal cruelty. Imagine Aliens coming to slave humans to labor without pay, summit us to torture for their research, and force us to kill each other for their entertainment. All of our rights will be taken because the Aliens are way more advance in technology and intellectually wise, so their interest are different from ours. So thinking that other species don't have right because they can't really fight for them is a sickening idea.

Animal rights is a spiritual and ethic excercise for human beings. If we can't be bothered to extend the most basic ethical consideration to the treatment of animals then what does that really say about us? It's not a question of do we have to...but rather, why wouldn't we show a reasonable degree of respect for another living thing? The way the food industry in this country for example treats animals is horrific beyond belief. Just because we can, do we really have to inflict horrendous pain in the name of efficiency or profit?

I strongly believe that animals should be treated in the most humane way; therefore there should be laws to protect them (often known as rights). Also, it is unreasonable for someone to say that because an animal cannot talk, we, as a society, cannot tell/know if they are in pain or not.

As the article highlighted the most devastating and disturbing images of animal factory farms, it is only reasonable that laws should be created in order to protect animals from the human race.
Chapter 828.12 (1) of Florida Statute states that “A person who unnecessarily overloads, overdrives, torments, deprives of necessary sustenance or shelter, or unnecessarily mutilates, or kills any animal, or causes the same to be done, or carries in or upon any vehicle, or otherwise, any animal in a cruel or inhumane manner, is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both”

Additionally, not only an animal can be protected from any cruel and unusual punishment during the owner’s lifetime; but a PET TRUST can be created- where the owner leaves a sum of money to a person for the benefit of the care of the pet upon the owner’s death. Thirty-nine states and the District of Columbia recognize pet trusts.

It is almost unnecessary for me to state that, in fact, I’ve thought about the issues mentioned in the article. As a member of PETA, I have being aware of these inhumane treatments those animals receive and as a result I have changed my diet.

When I eat meat, I don’t think about how the meat was processed. In the society we live in, almost half of the people are carnivores. All I remember growing up was my parents buying meat in the meat section and checking the date on the package to see if it hadn’t expired. Back in the 90’s one did not hear about how the cows and pigs and other sources of meat were raised. Is now in the new millennium, where more and more articles and videos are surfing up about their upbringing. I do not think the animals should be treated harmfully. After reading articles about this issue I feel bad eating meat knowing how they are tortured but I can’t change my ways of eating from one day to another. I think that the ones who should change their ways are, the people breeding these animals. They need to treat animals the way one should treat humans. The fact that animals can’t talk, doesn’t mean they don’t have feelings. They react the same way a human being reacts when in pain. One moans and groans or screams or cries, when we get hurt, the animals react the same way. I don’t see why some people need to make them suffer to kill them regardless of the fact the end result is that they die.

Since the creation of the earth, we find different type of living things and non-living things. There is an interdependence between living and non-living things.Within the living things there is also an interdependence as evidence by the food chain. The world get more producers than primary consumers, and so forth...Human is a canivore thus eating meat had always been a mean to end. However, animal cruelty is devastated. We are all animals, humans maybe a different kind of animals. We think we are the most reasonable animals. It is unacceptable that we make animals suffer. We must find a way to stop the atrocity or killing of animals.

Humans are the superior species and therefor should protect animals. I believe that eating animals is not bad as long as theirs a limit. For example, in an article "The Tragedy of the commons", it explains how us Humans take too much of our limited resources. This is a prime example of what is going on today with our animals. If we put a limit on how much animals we consume  we can preserve species and stop extinction. As far as animal cruelty, there will always be people in this world that want to harm animals. But we can work towards putting more attention on how these animals are being handled.

Human being is animal, but it has an intelligence superior to all other animals. This superiority does not allow human to mistreat, or to extent other species. Violence against animals is likely to lead violence against humans too. For this reason and others, we have to protect animals. But at the same time we can use them wisely for our better quality of life. Science especially in medical field uses animals (rats and rabbits) for research and treatment millions of lives have been saved from disease. Our life is more precious than animal one. As I know, there is not a civilization of animals. All we know comes from human being. We (human beings) designed and built the pyramids of Egypt, we walked on the moon. The great thinkers, the builders of nations, it’s us (men and women)! Make me foolish or wise; the interest of man comes before everything. And it's really absurd that in some societies, humans being relegate to second place. While we spend millions of dollars to clone a dog, people are dying of hunger. Today more than ever, millions people have no access to clean water, health care and education. How many Einstein, Mozart, Picasso, Lebrun James, why not, we kill in the bud? I do not want to offend those who love doggies, kitties and others; tell me when Arsht Center of Miami will project a concerto of dogs or an opera with cats. I'll be the first to take part.

For anyone to understand my point of view on this certain subject I have to let them know that I have never owned a pet in my life, I’ve never cared for a creature other than a human, I’ve never felt love or closeness to someone other than family members or friends. I believe that animals shouldn’t have rights just for the simple fact that they aren’t counted as humans like we are. I do believe they experience pain, suffering, and they can even love, but I don’t think they should have the same rights humans do. I don’t follow any religions, but as of right now I kind of believe in before and after life and I think that some people were chosen to be humans in this life, that doesn’t mean next time around we will be humans again and there is a chance we could come back as animals and what would happen then?
My honest opinion is that if they aren’t exactly the same as humans why should they have the same rights that we do?
I believe they should have some rights because it’s only fair to treat them as we would like to be treated, because after all we came from them, but I wouldn’t take it as far as giving them rights of their own.
So my conclusion is that being born as a human for me personally I should have rights, more than animals deserve, without a doubt. I do think about the animals each time I eat chicken or a burger, but that doesn’t take the fact that I’m not doing anything to stop myself from doing it, so unconsciously I don’t care about those animals, because if I did I would have already become a vegetarian.
